Almaty - the largest metropolis is the former capital of Kazakhstan with an estimated population of two million people. Almaty is the cultural, historic and economic center of Kazakhstan located at the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. A scenic backdrop of the mountains against the taller buildings makes a dramatic and unique sight. It's convenient location, developed infrastructure with world-class facilities and favorable climate for winter sports allowed Almaty to host the 7th Asian Winter Games in 2011 and the 28th Winter Universiade in 2017.
