A LEGEND OF THE ROCK

Borovoe has lots of interesting legends many of which have been told for centuries. One of them is about a rock island in the middle of the Borovoe lake called “Zhumbaktas”, which means a “mysterious stone” in Kazakh. According to the legend, in olden times a rich merchant (bai) had several sons and only one daughter whom he wanted to marry a wealthy man. She was extremely gorgeous and the word about her beauty quickly spread across all Kazakh lands. One day a young handsome musician came to a town where he met a rich man’s daughter. The young man was poor but very talented in fact. They fell in love at first sight. The girl’s father forbids them to marry, and the young lovers decided to run away under cover of the night. They found a small bay with an abundance of fish and very warm and clear water. The young man built a boat which they used to swim in the lake and sing songs together.
When the father found out he told his sons to catch the fugitives and not to return until they find the lovers. He ordered to return his daughter home, but the young man to be killed.
Soon young couple was found, but they managed to escape, swimming away from the pursuers in a boat in the middle of the lake. The insidious brothers began to shoot sharpened arrows at them and one of the arrows finally hit the young man right in his heart. Mortally wounded, he fell out of the boat. As the girl saw her beloved die she burst into tears and realized that she could not live without her beloved. She raised both hands into the sky and prayed Tengri to turn her into the stone so that she won’t be captured by her brothers. Tengri showed compassion towards her and fulfilled her request. In a moment the girl and the boat in the middle of the lake turned into a huge rock.

Borovoe

If you look at this rock from different sides, you can see mysterious images. It looks like a boat from one side, and a girl with her hair blown by the wind from the other side. And if you swim a little to the side, the girl crying for her lover, turns into an old woman, still grieving for her chosen one.
Perhaps, that is why they called this rock “Zhumbaktas” - the mystery stone
.
